El martes 7 de mayo del 2019 se celebra el Día Mundial del Asma, organizado por la Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)(link is external), para promocionar la concienciación sobre el asma y su tratamiento en todo el mundo.
El primer día mundial del asma se celebró en 1998, participando 35 países conjuntamente con la celebración de la primera Reunión Mundial sobre el asma en Barcelona, España. Desde el año 2008 hasta la actualidad, el lema ha sido «Puedes Controlar tu Asma» (“You can control your asthma”) y pretende estimular a los pacientes a tomar parte activa en el control de su enfermedad.
El asma es una enfermedad que afecta a más de 300 millones de personas en el mundo y el 10% de éstas son niños. Se trata de la enfermedad crónica más frecuente en la infancia, caracterizada por episodios de dificultad respiratoria y pitos (sibilancias), que mejora con medicación. Actualmente, aunque no existe un tratamiento curativo total, con una adecuada educación y tratamiento se puede llevar una vida saludable y sin limitaciones. Es importante controlar los factores de riesgo y realizar el tratamiento preventivo y la técnica inhaladora correctamente. Un inadecuado control de la enfermedad disminuye la función pulmonar en la edad adulta y puede llegar a afectar al crecimiento.
Este año la GINA utiliza la palabra STOP con su símbolo internacional para indicarnos que hay que parar el asma. La palabra STOP está compuesta por las siglas de una serie de palabras que dan las claves de cómo se puede parar o controlar el asma:
- Síntomas (que hay que valorar).
- Testar la respuesta que se obtiene con la medicación y las medidas ambientales.
- Observar y evaluar al paciente de forma continuada.
- Proceder a ajustar el tratamiento y las medidas de control ambiental.
